FAQs

How does acupuncture work?
According to Chinese Medical theory, the body has 12 meridians through which energy or Qi flows. Excess, deficient or obstructed Qi causes pain and dysfunction of the body’s normal abilities. The meridians can be influenced by needling acupuncture points. Acupuncture unblocks the obstruction and re-establishes the regular flow of qi through the meridians. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by Acupuncture, results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities promoting physical and emotional well-being.

Does it hurt?
Acupuncture is a safe and a generally painless procedure. Pain however is a perception and you may feel a sensation when the needle is inserted. When the correct stimulus has been obtained, the patients should feel some tingling, heaviness or warming sensation either around the needle or traveling up or down the affected meridian.

How deep do needles go?
This depends upon the nature of the disease, the location of the points selected, patient’s size, age & constitution. Usually needles are inserted from ¼ to 1 inch in depth.

How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the duration, severity and nature of your complaint. You may need only a single treatment for an acute condition, while a series of 5 to 15 treatments may resolve more chronic problems. Some degenerative conditions may require several treatments over time. Prevention is an important aspect of wellness care. Some patients choose to come in weekly, bi-weekly or monthly for preventative and stress relieving treatments.

Is there anything I need to do before a treatment?
Eat a small snack approximately an hour before treatment but try not to eat 30 min prior to appointment time. Wear loose, comfortable fitting clothing.

Is there anything I need to do while receiving acupuncture?
Relax! Breathe deep and let the treatment take its course. Maintain your position on the treatment table, it is advisable not to make any sudden movements. If you feel uncomfortable tell your practitioner and the needles can be readjusted or withdrawn accordingly. Some patients often find themselves falling asleep during a treatment. This is quite beneficial as it helps the treatment work on a deeper level of the body.

What can I expect after the treatment?
Some patients experience an immediate total or partial relief of their symptoms. This relief may last or may return within hours or days. In a few cases, there may be no immediate relief, but remain patient… subsequent visits should help. You may also notice you feel more relaxed or sleep more soundly. Overall, you should expect to feel more balanced.
